HAPPY FAMILY - BATTISTA vs HOAKSER PRE GRAFFALITE PAINTING

The ongoing series of PreGraffalites just got added to with this latest piece called " A Happy Family - The Thread of Life, originally painted by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Torriglia (1858 - 1937).

BEFORE...

AFTER...

This old reproduction print on hard board has been carefully doctored with acrylics and remixed with a commissioned looking Family mural in the living quarters of this hard working family.. I wanted the mural to look faded and blend in with the rest of the painting, which required lots of weathering and washes as it looked far too fresh without..

The aim of these paintings is to include graffiti style artwork into them as if it always belonged there.. It sounds easy, but adding artwork around or behind already existing shapes, shades and tones of colour requires lots of paint mixing and careful choices which can't be erased if it looks wrong.. It's quite a slow process that needs quite a lot of thought and careful application mostly with small brushes..

Also featured in this piece is that masked man character proudly hanging on their wall, along with a few other bits of artwork they seem to like.. The chunky wooden frame got re sprayed in black, which compliments the piece and looks much nicer (in my opinion) than the original old wood and has been finished with a coat of lacquer.

As usual, if you'd like this piece to be hanging on one of your walls, head over to the store (here) where its currently listed with worldwide shipping available..

Thanks for looking!!

PLAYING WITH FIRE..DOCTORED PRINT PAINTING

This week some time was spent pushing paint over an old recycled print by an unknown artist.. This doctored piece "Playing With Fire" now has someone who looks a bit like me creating a metal wildstyle HOAKS sculpture in his workshop, with a Maskedman poster hanging in the background  After thinking about what to do with the original image for a while, one day I noticed that the shape of the letter A was kind of already in the original print so that's where the paint started. Trying to match the colors and tones of the original old print was the biggest challenge aswell as keeping the paint wet enough to blend the colors but not too wet that it warps the paper..Something that was learnt the hard way on a previous project..

Pictured above is the image before it was doctored / vandalized, for better or for worse.. It's behind glass in this picture so the colors may be a little different to the progress shots below..After having it sitting around for a while and thinking about different ideas and ways to tackle it, the other day it just started to happen..

The first line in the A that already existed and the first few panels go down..All the paint was applied with no sketch marks or plan, and the colors were mostly mixed on the surface of the print while they were wet enough to work with..

Starting to take shape as all the letters get worked out and worked on in a weird order..The H is still wet and in it's first layer of paint at this point. Once it's dry, wetting it can pull the paint back off, so it's mostly dry mixing paint on the surface in thin layers to continue adding more rust, highlights shadows and details to the metal work after this point..

Like a few other of my doctored paintings and PreGraffalites there's sometimes a self portrait involved using an existing character from the piece.. This one was pretty easy but if we're being honest he's a little short..

So far every google search of what name the artists signature might say has come up with nothing..The original print was or is number 76/750 and signed..It's now number one of one.of 750..
I'd like to find out more about this print, the artist and the man in the picture, so if you've got any information or have seen this print before please let me know...

The Maskedman also made his way into the painting in the form of a print hanging in the background, along with some other small details and tags. The mount was also the original but looked the wrong kind of old, so it was painted and customized with washes of acrylics and spray paint, into a rusty burnt one of a kind frame.

After several hours of carefully placed paint, it's now finished and for sale from the canvas and prints section of my Bigcartel store..

POST UPDATE!!

After writing this blog post I was contacted by someone who owns a couple of my doctored paintings with information about the original piece.. The artists name is Phil Hobbs and he is primarily a water color artist from Yorkshire.. The title of the piece I worked on is called The Blacksmith and was painted at Benson's forge.... It's really cool to know a little about the piece and where it came from..Big thanks to DJSpydee for the info and support.. BENCHTALK PREGRAFFALITE ORIGINAL AND PRINTS

Over the last few days I finally got into this painting I'd been thinking about for a  while.. Originally an image by M.Dovaston, this is now my latest Pre Graffalite called Bench Talk, showing a group of writers meeting to work out how they plan on going all city, with the help of the horse and coach system.

"After getting their hands on a map of the horse and coach yard locations these guys start planning their attack to get in and get out unseen and leave something behind for everyone to see the next morning, all over the town!"

The original piece measures 27x21 inches and was doctored with acrylics..Matching the dullness of the faded colors of the original print was challenging and there are lots of  details in the piece..

The original piece is now available from my Etsy store and there are also a limited number of A3 prints available from my BIGCARTEL store for just £15 each..

HOAKSER VS DOVASTON part 3 - Pregraffalites series

It's been a while since I posted any of my new stuff up, so I'll try and catch up over the next day or two...Last week I finished my latest PreGraffalite piece, which is a doctored piece originally by Margaret Dovaston, adapted and changed by me..  I have previously painted over two of Dovaston's pieces before (which you can see here ) so when my friend Amy found me this at a car boot sale, I couldn't wait to get part 3 started..
This is how the finished piece looks with most of the main details featured..

Below are a few photographs taken through the stages of painting..

Parental Consent - New pre graffalite..A Special Pleader part 3

Not long after finishing my last Pre-graffalite, over a smaller version of this exact print, I found another bigger version in a local charity shop..I couldn't leave it there..I had to get it.. This one is much bigger than the previous, "The New Dress" and has a really nice chunky frame, which suits the picture well.
Now featuring a girl, who tried out graffiti on her bedroom wall, without her parent's permission, and her innocent dog. This piece used to be known as "The Special Pleader"..The original is pictured above..This latest version is called "Parental Consent"..

There are a few nice details I like in this piece.. Painting like a 6 year old in spray paint, using a brush was  harder than you'd think..Then painting in a realistic style is something I'm still learning.I'm happy with the roller propped up against the wall, and her doll, who clearly got forgotten about once the paints came out..There is also the piece she copied from on the floor, now with red paint on it, and the roller tray..

This piece measures 74 x 56cm with a 4cm thick frame and is on sale from my ebay store for £139.00 plus postage..Click HERE to take a closer look..
For more like this, take a look at the back catalogue of my Pre-Graffalites now in my new web site section..Prints are also possible..

The New Dress - A Special Pleader graffiti custom

"The New Dress" is my latest doctored painting, painted with acrylics over an old framed print.. This piece used to be called A Special Pleader and is quite a well known image.. (See below for how it used to look..)

I painted out everything except the girl and her doll, and built up layers of my tags and throwups.. I wanted to make it look as though she had found a place where graffiti was, and had a go herself..She painted some hearts with some empty cans she found that were lying around.. It all ended in tears though as she got paint on her new dress, which her mom's not going to be happy about..

This piece is available from my STORE, priced at £134.99 plus postage..

PRINTED VERSION...
Prints are available too, at a fraction of the price, in loads of sizes and finishes from HERE..

YOUNG AT HEART - new doctored Pre-Graffalite Sigismund Goetze vs Hoakser

This is my newest addition to my doctored paintings , Pre Graffalites portfolio..Now titled "Young at Heart", I painted this over an old framed print of a painting originally by Sigisimund Goetze.. It was printed and mounted on some sort of hardboard, that was framed behind frosted glass...The pictures I took on my phone below didn't come out too good, but this is how it looked the night I took it apart and started work.
It took quite a few sessions to build up the layers and it changed quite a few times. It was quite difficult making that much mess and not getting any on her.. She's only got the colours on her clothes that she used on the wall herself..

With these paintings, I like to mix fine art and vandalism...Or at least try and paint graffiti that looks like it might  belong there...

When this youngster found a can on her way home through an alley way, instinct took over and she had to have a go.. It's o.k though she only drew hearts, made a mess of her hat and dress, and wrote the word LOVE... so she's not a vandal yet....right?

This piece is 53cm tall and 37cm wide (in its frame) .Which is the original one it came in.I re-sprayed it in matt black and painted the title badge in silver.. Its an engraved badge that reads GUYSON
Sigisimund Goetze
(b 1886)
This piece is now up for sale from HERE.. for £120.00 or a near offer...Prints will be available soon.. Thanks for looking...

New Painting. Religious Studies...

This is my newest piece I've been working on lately, it's finally finished and framed..I've called it "Religious Studies"..
I chose this title because of the obvious religious looking figure in the piece, and because I'm not religious at all. Don't get me started on why I'm not - each to their own..
Graffiti is my religion - meaning I do it religiously..I study it hard, the same way you should if you believe in something..
I had a rough idea of what I wanted to try and do when I first saw this picture, but I never really plan a painting out too much..I knew I wanted it to look like everything belonged there, maybe the Priest is blessing my work?
I included loads of details in this piece, look for some of my masked man custom cans, some KIDROBOT  vinyls (a dunny and a fatcap) sketches on paper and a sketch book with a tiny "ohell my name is" sticker, some spray paint and a few more for you to discover yourselves..To graffiti artists the book SUBWAY ART is our Bible, it was the first book, the reason why graffiti exploded,so I had to include that as it fitted so well..

The piece measures 28cm tall and 23cm wide.. In its original frame which I re-sprayed black and clear coated, it measures 31cm x 26.5cm.. The original piece before I vandalised it was by Nicolaes Maes (1634 - 1693) and was titled "An Old Woman Praying".. and I hope it wasn't valuable!! Here's how it looks before and after..

To see a few more paintings like this by me, check out the PRE-GRAFFALITES section of my website.. Prints of some of these will be available soon.. This piece will be for sale, a few people have asked me for "dibs" on first refusal of this style painting so it's not going on sale just yet.. If you are interested or want to be added to that list let me know and drop me an email hoaksah@hotmail.com
